William’s journey with the NOLA Gold began in 2018 during the club’s inaugural season when general manager Ryan Fitzgerald noticed him playing at a rugby tournament in  Aspen. “Fitz” reached out and invited William to join the Gold, which he eagerly accepted while still completing his freshman year at UL Lafayette. Reflecting on his introduction to rugby, William credits Jesuit High School for laying the groundwork, where he learned the game from scratch and eventually captained the team to a championship, honing his skills and understanding of the sport.

Looking back on his time with the NOLA Gold, William cherishes memorable moments such as his debut match and an exhilarating upset victory over a top-ranked team in Los Angeles. These experiences were pivotal in his development as a player, despite facing stiff competition for a starting role.

Acknowledging the challenges of securing a regular starting position, William emphasizes the high level of competition within the team, driven by players with international experience and diverse rugby backgrounds. Making the MLR First 15 this past week was a significant achievement for him, attributing his success to the support and motivation from his teammates, who constantly push him to improve both physically and mentally.

While modest about being recognized as a top player in Major League Rugby, William acknowledges his growth and progress over the years, fueled by dedicated coaching and personal commitment. His first try of the season against San Diego was a proud moment, celebrated with excitement by his parents and fiancé, who have been his steadfast supporters throughout his rugby journey.

Beyond the field, William values the camaraderie within the NOLA Gold team, describing this season as one of the best in terms of team unity and friendship off the field, which enhances trust and cohesion during matches. Mentors like Cam Dolan and Kane Thomson have played influential roles in William’s development, pushing him to elevate his game and refine his skills in crucial areas like lineouts and defensive strategies.

Looking ahead, William’s goals include winning the championship with the NOLA Gold and continuing to improve specific aspects of his game such as his direct running and defensive prowess. His involvement with the team has not only shaped his rugby career but also played a significant role in his personal growth and community engagement.

Offering advice to aspiring young athletes, William emphasizes the importance of hard work, dedication, and resilience in pursuing a career in professional rugby. Despite setbacks like a recent facial injury requiring stitches, William remains committed to his team and passionate about the sport, embodying the spirit of perseverance and determination that defines his journey with the NOLA Gold.
