After an unforgettable season in the Crescent City and over 70 matches across Major League Rugby, NOLA Gold Hooker Pat O’Toole has officially announced his retirement from professional rugby.
Born in Louisburgh, Ireland, Pat’s journey took him from the west coast of Connacht to the competitive pitches of American rugby, where he became a cornerstone of the MLR and a true leader for NOLA Gold.
His professional path began with Connacht Rugby’s academy, where he honed his craft in one of Europe’s toughest development systems. In 2018, Pat crossed the Atlantic to join the San Diego Legion, launching a North American chapter that would define his rugby legacy. After a stint with the Houston SaberCats, he found his true home in 2021, when he joined NOLA Gold.
Over four powerful seasons, Pat became a fixture in the Gold front row, known for his relentless work rate, scrummaging power, and fearless presence around the breakdown. He reached a major milestone in early 2025, earning his 50th NOLA Gold cap, part of a career total of 70 MLR appearances and 15 tries.
Pat wasn’t just a hooker—he was a leader, a tone-setter, and someone teammates trusted in the trenches. Whether crashing over the try line or anchoring a critical scrum, Pat embodied the spirit of NOLA rugby: gritty, passionate, and unwavering.
Pat leaves behind more than stats—he leaves a legacy of heart, humility, and professionalism. He helped define this club’s DNA, and his contributions will echo long after his final whistle.
From everyone at NOLA Gold: Thank you, Pat, for every tackle, every scrum, and every ounce of fight you gave this team. New Orleans will always be proud to have called you one of our own.
